Chapter 21
âYes, thatâs right, Ms. Dodson,â Bailey said to the reporter. âThe new proposal for the Outer Rim project will go to Skelm, in Sector Fifteen.â
âCan you give our readers any insight as to why you chose that settlement above some of the others, which are already larger and more efficient?â
âErmââ she stole a furtive glance at her palms, where Mae had written the answers to the questions sheâd be asked. âProximity was a major factor in this decision. While other locations were⦠um⦠better fitted out with regards to machinery, we will save years in getting materials to the new station over time.â
âAnd what would you say to those, like Marcus Winter, who have accused you of taking bribes?â
Shit. That wasnât written on her hand. âI, er⦠uh⦠actuallyââ
âIn fact, we have an eyewitness account that there was nearly an altercation between Winter and Overseer Allemande at the gala the other night.â The reporter smiled, and Bailey took it as a threat. âAmong other accounts, as well.â
Bailey cleared her throat. âAs I was saying, itâs important to take into account that Marcus Winter is angry that his proposal was ultimately unsuccessful, and is lashing out in an attempt to salvage his reputation before he returns home.â Damn, that sounded almost decent. âAs for other accounts, off the record, they were unrelated to the proposal consideration. Iâm sure you can understand why I am hesitant to remark on my personal life right now.â
âYes, General, that is understood. Now, for my final question, some are wondering whether this signifies a new shrewd political alliance between yourself and the overseer. What would you say to such speculations?â
âI would say that they are reading too far into what is no more than a routine decision, made to help advance the Outer Rim project.â
âGreat! Thank you so much for your time today, maâam, and may I just say what a huge fan I am of your work.â
âOh. Thank you?â
âI hope someday to be the first member of the Coalition press corps at the Outer Rim.â She slid the notebook into her leather briefcase and smoothed her skirts. âPerhaps you could lean on that decision?â
âI, uhâsure. Maybe. Good luck.â
âA recommendation from someone like you could go a very long way in boosting oneâs chances to ascend up the career ladder, you know. You have incredible influence, General Fineglass.â
Gods, was everyone here corrupt? âIâll think about it.â Bailey paused, her hand poised on the back of the chair sheâd been sitting in. âI guess it depends what your article says.â When in the Capital, do as they do. Her own moral compass had no place in a city like this.
âI can assure you it will be nothing but glowing praise. You should be grateful, you know. I bet some presses would be itching to rake you over the coals for⦠well. You know.â She gave her a razor sharp, brilliant smile. False reassurances. Bait.
âIndeed.â
âIt was nice meeting you, maâam.â
âMm.â
Barely noon, and she was already exhausted. It
